WELTEVREDEN PARK – St Michael's Retirement Village residents once again show their fitness at their 10th annual Fun Walk.

St Michael’s Retirement Village held their 10th annual Fun Walk on 19 September at the St Michael’s Retirement Village in Weltevreden Park.

Head Matron Dawn Meyer said the walk, led by trained dogs from Paws for People NGO, is held every year to create fun-filled activities for residents.

According to the Paws for People website, they offer various programmes in which animals are used for therapy.

St Michaels assistant Matron Erica Joubert said the dogs from Paws for People visit residents every second week, and received treats and certificates after the race to award them.

At 9.30am Katine Kristos, the eldest resident in the village, rang the bell to start off the walk to the sound of their annual fun walk song Chariots of Fire.

Kristos did not take part in the walk herself but said she felt honoured to start off one of their biggest annual events.

The medic team, Quick Response Service, was on standby in case of an emergency and also acted as marshals to ensure no cheating,

Residents from 60 to 100 years old took part in the walk.

Jack and Loraine Williamson were the winners of the wheelchair race and Angela Yrmitage won the Village Race with her dog Leyla.

The Mini Flats race was won by Dawie Coetzee.

After the excitement, the residents enjoyed some refreshments at the prize-giving.

Meyer explained St Michaels Retirement Village was not only established with the aim to assure quality assistance for residents, but also to ensure their happiness.
