Florida cricket boys win against Roodekrans

Two undefeated teams Laerskool Roodekrans and Laerskool Florida go head-to-head for a Johannesburg West Super Cricket league finals.

The afternoon of September 11 saw many parents and spectators come together to watch the nail-biting and head-to-head cricket game between Laerskool Roodekrans and Laerskool Florida as part of the Johannesburg West Super League.

This final game started at 14:00 and in the first half, Laerskool Florida was fielding and Roodekrans was batting. Despite a commendable effort, Roodekrans suffered a narrow defeat, with Florida emerging victorious by nine wickets.

Roodekrans posted a respectable score of 131 runs but lost all 10 wickets in just 23 overs, and when Florida’s batsmen took to the field, they reached a total of 132 runs with ease and lost only one wicket in 21.3 overs.

Janus van Niekerk, one of the first team coaches for Roodekrans, acknowledged that Florida was the stronger team on the day. Florida’s first team coach Rynhardt van Lelyveld commended his boys as they are now crowned the Johannesburg West League Champions.

“Following our challenging batting innings, I noticed our players struggled mentally, and that slump carried into our bowling performance, making it difficult to build momentum,” shared Janus.

This loss marked the end of Roodekrans’ undefeated streak in the league, having won their previous five games. However, the team also succeeded in the Laerskool Helderkruin Night League tournament, winning all five games and claiming the championship title.

Looking ahead, Roodekrans is set to participate in the night League tournament hosted by Laerskool Fairland, starting on September 17.

Janus remains optimistic and said they are excited to see what lies ahead for their team.
