Church on a mission to save Florida

Churches and community organisations amped up their efforts to save Florida from decay, both physically and spiritually.

The Heritage of Faith Worship Centre is on a mission to save Florida – both the town and the residents.

Every weekend, church volunteers take to the streets of Florida, conducting cleanup operations and feeding those in need.

According to church pastor Earl Morrison, their feeding scheme extends much further than just quelling physical hunger.

“We offer delicious warm meals, but also food for the soul in the form of prayer,” he says. “Our team avails themselves for the good of the area and the good of the community.”

During the Roodepoort Record’s visit on Saturday, July 20, church teams were cleaning up Ruth Street, which has become notorious for rampant poverty, illicit drug trading and prostitution.

“It starts with us,” says Morrison. “Coming out and working to make our neighbourhoods safe and clean, while at the same time offering prayers and nourishment within the community is what we feel called to do.

“If we can touch one life, and make a difference to the future of one person, we will count that as success enough.”

Wesley Peterson, a local artist who simply describes himself as a concerned resident and friend of the church, adds that they work closely with community organisations like Florida Block Watch and Florida South Residents Association, regularly assisting and receiving assistance at various cleanup campaigns in the area.

“We are all working toward the same goal: the upliftment of our local community.”
