Solutionary Walk – the journey worth its weight in gold

14 students embarked on a 600km journey from Lesotho to Krugersdorp to raise funds.

After immense dedication and endurance, 14 students have completed the Solutionary Walk from Lesotho to Krugersdorp.

Their journey began on June 26, and they arrived in Roodepoort on July 5. They embarked on an awareness and fundraising journey of 600km from Maseru, Lesotho to Krugersdorp West, in celebration of Youth Month, as well as to raise a total of R24m for various student needs and sustainable community projects.

According to Pastor Tona Morake, the organiser of this walk, the journey was worth its weight in gold, and they were able to complete their mission.

“We aimed to do career exhibitions at every stop we make, and one highlight for me was when we stopped at Gaboranta in one of the rural areas with no basic services and we were the first ones to present a career exhibition in that area.

“On June 27, we walked to Bloemfontein, and we were welcomed by different stakeholders from the University of Free State, and we had a tour,” he said.

Tona also added that they had amazing sponsors and support from various businesses, and they received T-shirts and banners, and it was worth the painstaking hours they spent walking.

Lesego Lehaha, Mogale City’s Youth Mayor, stated that the trip was challenging and that they had to wear face masks due to obstacles on the roads they had to cross. However, they were greeted warmly in Lesotho, the locals in Maseru were encouraging, and the taxi drivers escorted them.

According to fellow walker Limpho Natsoane, the walk was not only physically challenging but emotional as well, because they had to keep reminding themselves that they were walking for a good cause.
