Abacus math genius shines in competition

A Discovery Primary School young math genius finishes in second place in an abacus competition.

Discovery Primary School learner Amber Stellenberg proved herself to be a maths prodigy when she obtained second place in the level 10 Abacus Soroban National competition in Cape Town.

The Abacus Maths Soroban Association of South Africa (AMSSA) held its national competition on May 2 in Rustenburg Girls High School and Amber was one of the 159 participants who were eager to show their math skills.

Amber started practising Abacus Maths in pre-school and impressed the judges with her exceptional skills and passion for mathematics. At just nine years old, she won a silver medal in the level 10 category, which she described as the most challenging for her age group. This was the second national competition she had attended.

Amber’s mother, Mellisa Stellenberg, expressed her immense pride in her daughter’s accomplishments and commanded her for the hard work she puts in every year.

“We are proud of her and thankful to Louise Ludick for her dedication to Amber from preschool,” she said.

Looking ahead, the young math genius will be preparing for the regional competition set to take place in August, and with hard work and determination, she is confident that she will qualify for nationals again next year.
