Witpoortjie boy outshines in maths competition

Laerskool Culembeeck learner dominated in the Abacus Maths Soroban Association of South Africa national competition.

Laerskool Culembeeck learner Mbekezeli Fezile Ndlovu (11) was crowned Champion of Champions during the Abacus Maths Soroban Association of South Africa (AMSASA) National Abacus competition in Cape Town on May 2.

Mbekezeli claimed a second position in the level four category in the competition. He competed against learners from all over South Africa and is on his way to compete in the AMSASA International Abacus competition in India from July 20–21.

“Mbekezeli came to our school to do Grade Four and from the onset, teachers managed to see his love for numbers. While others see maths as a bundle of numbers, he saw it as his language,” Laerskool Culembeeck maths teacher Tshepo Mogopudi said.

Mbelekezi will compete against learners across the globe in level three and four categories in the upcoming competition and he is the youngest participant to represent South Africa. Both the school and the AMSASA team are confident that the youngster will bring the international trophy home.

The school joined a partnership with AMSASA in 2018 to help learners improve their mathematics levels and the relationship between two parties managed to work per the arrangements.

The AMSASA team encourages parents and learners to take part in mathematics competitions always presented to them as it helps learners with academic achievements. The school still needs financial support to help him go to India this winter.

The school urges individuals to contact them via email at laerskool.culem@gmail.com or call 011 769 1305 at any time for donations.
