Wrestling referee travels the globe

Charles Villet's refereeing abilities have allowed him to see the world.

Charles Villet has been part of the wrestling fraternity for the past 51 years, and even though he has many achievements behind his name, he is not showing any signs of slowing down.

He has been a referee at two Olympic Games and recently had the opportunity to travel to Ghana for the United World Wrestling (UWW) African Games, as well as Egypt where he refereed in the African Championships that took place from March 14–19.

Charles said that he was selected as the UWW delegate for the Africa Games in Ghana.

“Being selected as a delegate, as well as a referee to represent my country, is a great honour. The Africa Games and African Championships are both big and important events on the wrestling calendar.”

In 2019, Charles also received the award for the World’s Best Referee and received the Golden Whistle. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength, with his refereeing skills being in high demand. He mentioned that he maintains his high standards by watching the latest videos of wrestling, and uses his knowledge at tournaments.

“This way I ensure I can be the best ref and not make unnecessary mistakes.”

Charles’ motto in life is to always be strong, fair and neutral. “It also helps to be relaxed and focused during matches. Ensure you are updated with the UWW’s latest rules and actions; this will help you be fair and give your best on the day,” he said.

His advice for wrestlers on the mat, is simple, “Just believe in yourself and give it all you have. You are already a winner just to be on the mat; never lie down. The way you get up after falling will help you become the best.”

Charles concluded by saying, “In my journey to become the best referee in the world, I believed in myself and had to overcome all obstacles on my path.”
