Donkey Derby a resounding success

The Rest Ur Ass Donkey Derby was a resounding success with hotly contested prizes and a festive market.

The Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary in Ruimsig held an eventful Donkey Derby on January 27.

Hundreds of people showed up and enjoyed the fun-filled family event complete with exciting races for everybody – except the actual donkeys – and a market featuring everything from unique arts and crafts to clothing, and delicious food and drink.

Of course, the most famous residents of Rest Ur Ass – the donkeys – fully enjoyed the spotlight, delighting in the attention of derby-goers young and old.

The junior races were especially hotly contested with more than one spill by overeager ‘jockeys’.

The derby itself consisted of several races in different categories, where entrants made their own ‘donkeys’ with a broomstick and other materials, racing each other around a predetermined course, complete with obstacles.

The winner of each race received a medal, and all money generated from the event goes directly to the care of the sanctuary’s ever-growing population of rescued donkeys.

Donkeys are among the most abused animals in the world, often worked to complete exhaustion, and then simply abandoned. The Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary is dedicated to providing a place of rest and tranquility for rescued donkeys to live out their days peacefully and at ease.
