Roodepoort-based Strongman shows determination and focus can help reach your goals

Not just brawn, but brains as well. Africa's Strongest Man 2023 shares his journey.

From novice to Africa’s Strongest Man 2023 in nine months, 28-year-old Rayno Nel has surpassed his own expectations through hard work and training.

Rayno explained that he got curious about the strongman sport and got into contact with local strongman Terence Bosman, now his coach and the rest was history.

Rayno explained that it got him out of his comfort zone and he competed in four different strongman competitions and came first in three of them.

“I won the Arnold’s Classic Africa’s Strongman competition, which was my first time in a competitive setting,” he exclaimed.

There the spark that was growing in his veins turned to flames and he went on to take part in the Gauteng Strongman Opens, where he came third. This did not deter him though, as it motivated him to work harder and keep his mind focused on the next competition, South Africa’s Strongest Man 2023.

His determination paid off and he came out on top as the official South Africa’s Strongest Man this year.

“I would attribute my success to a few things – my amazing coach, the support of family and friends, and just good genetics,” he grinned.

A week ago Rayno was named Africa’s Strongest Man and has secured his spot in the internationally acclaimed Official Strong Man Games next year.

He is not only brawn but brains, as he is an electrical engineer by trade.

“My advice to anyone who wants to become a strongman would be to push through the uncertainty of if you are gonna make it, find a coach with your interests at heart, and get out of your comfort zone!”

Rayno concluded that he is done competing for the year, and will keep training and honing his skills for what the next year brings.
