Two young children lose their lives in Fleurhof shack fire

The fire that broke out at an informal settlement in Fleurhof in the early hours of this morning (September 3) was believed to have been caused by a burning candle.

Two children, believed to be between the ages of two and five, lost their lives and one woman sustained minor injuries and was treated for smoke inhalation in a fire at their informal settlement dwelling.

The woman was later transported to the nearest healthcare facility for further treatment.

According to Xolile Khumalo from the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services, the fire broke out in the early hours of September 3 in Fleurhof Ext 5 informal settlement and caused damage to about 44 residences.

“At this stage, the cause of the fire incident is believed to be a candle which was left unattended,” concluded Khumalo.
