KJK Judo Club displays dojo’s excellence at national and international competitions

Judoka return from Eastern Cape with multiple medals and championship crowns.

KJK Judo Club has a fresh honours roll of champions to celebrate.

Sensei Katja Bruwer’s judoka participated in consecutive championships in the Eastern Cape in July and August. Across all events, the club earned 26 medals with 12 of those being gold.

The South African Judo Championships were held at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University from July 5 to 7 featuring Kumite and Kata sections. In the Kumite section, Armand Coetzee and Tia Shepard earned bronze medals while Mercedez Erasmus, Rikus Hall and Gerhard Schultz earned silver. Bringing home the gold and being crowned national champions were Moagi Molefe, Ruhan Terblanche, Tyla Stacey-Hale and Rynard Hall.

In the Kata, Mercedez and Oabile Molefe added bronze medals, Seth Grobler joined Rynard in earning a silver medal while Willem Truter and Gerhard bagged gold. The club can boast two double Kata gold medalists as Hunter Erasmus and Moagi Molefi both demonstrated outstanding form and technique.

Seven members of the club were part of the South African team at the Commonwealth Judo Championships held at Feather Market Hall in Port Elizabeth from August 3 to 6. The magnificent seven would have done their sensei proud as each one managed at least a podium finish. Ruhan was the lone bronze medalist while Tyla, , Rikus, Moagi and Armand all won silver.

Earning their third medals in as many competitions, Mercedez and Rynard were both victorious gold medalists and now carry the title of Commonwealth judo champions.
