Residents left panicked over gun violence in Jerusalema

Reports of a shootout were logged with Florida police who dispatched a vehicle to the scene with the first shots being heard around 19:00.

Florida residents are concerned about the frequency and intensity of shootouts in the Jerusalema area where alleged zama zamas (illegal miners) are causing mayhem.

On August 15 residents were panicked regarding a not-so-familiar occurrence of a shootout, with the first shots being fired around 19:00.

Residents expressed their fears about the gunfire on community groups citing that it is not the first time these shootings occur, with some posting that the ‘gunshots are much louder tonight’ and ‘the shots are coming from Main Reef Road’.

Florida Community Policing Forum (CPF) stated that the police were made aware and urged residents to stay indoors. They also attributed the cause of the incident to a turf war.

“Police and all role players are aware of the gunshots going off along the zama zama mining belt,” Farhaad Sadiwalla of Florida CPF said.

Florida police station commander, Colonel Tsotetsi confirmed the gunshots fired and said that Florida police are continuing with high-density integrated multi-disciplinary operations in the area.

“A van was dispatched to the area last night and an investigation is still ongoing. Progress will be shared in due time,” Tsotetsi said.
