Honeydew Residents Association hosts monthly meeting

From cable theft to proactive initiatives to help combat crime, the monthly HRA meeting opened the floor for discussion on matters close to the heart of the community.

The Honeydew Residents Association (HRA) held its monthly meeting on July 20 at 39 Pierre Road.

Going through the agenda of the meeting, Dawie Prinsloo from EC Security informed the community of the initiative that a local group, the Power Rangers, has started. According to Prinsloo, the group aims to lock power boxes in the area to ensure there is no illegal tampering.

“A few arrests took place this month as well as accounts of people who got mugged while walking along the roads,” added Prinsloo, stating that there were no reports of murders, but a few housebreakings.

Anthony Beer, Honeydew CPF sector 3 head, informed the attendees of a domestic fight that escalated to a killing by the partner.

“Crime is very patchy and we are struggling with a few areas,” stated Beer, adding that Little Falls and Wilgeheuwel are under pressure. Beer explained that at one point the community experienced break-ins every night.

He goes on to say that there has been a report of four armed men dressed as City Power workers in Weltevredenpark. Beer encouraged neighbours to look out for one another and exclaimed that fraud is the second-highest crime at the moment, adding that the CPF’s account got emptied due to fraud.

“House robberies are also on the rise. Light up your house and driveways, even motion sensor lights can also help,” he urged the community.

Ward councillor Jacques Hoon reported back on the water.

“We had a meeting with Joburg Water and they informed me that all the reservoirs are back up to 100%,” elaborated Hoon, “this was the single biggest outage that Joburg Water has had, and it was well planned.”

Hoon mentioned that cable theft is still a problem in Wilgeheuwel and that everything is on track for the Hendrik Potgieter Road collapse to be fixed by the end of November this year.

“The Lutz Substation upgrade is still on track and will be completed at the end of this year. It is extended from Christiaan de Wet to Peter Road and capacity will be created to alleviate the Christiaan de Wet Substation,” explained Hoon.

“No copper cables are being used, only aluminum cables have been used.”

Regarding municipal values, Hoon informed the community that the City of Johannesburg has increased the value of approximately a million properties by up to 40%.

“The time for objections has ended, as the cut-off time was in June 2022,” he explained, mentioning that community members should object anyway, if you don’t object they get away with it.”

HRA chairperson Izak van Rooyen gave feedback on the sewerage pipe leak by Two Rivers Estate, stating that the pipe has been fixed and the sewerage leaking has been stopped.

“We are going to push to have the substation locked, but we need donations,” added van Rooyen.

Van Rooyen exclaimed that the HRA will be one year old in August and thus the annual general meeting is in the works.

The next monthly meeting will be held in August.
