Allen Glen High School to be well represented at upcoming Easter rugby festivals

A host of players and coaches were selected for Golden Lions Presidential XV.

The rewards for hard work are opportunities to take on the elite.

The heart of the Lions Presidential XV team that will be competing at the upcoming St John’s Easter rugby festival will be fueled by the Blue Machine. Competing at St John’s between April 6 and 10, the Lions Presidential XV will have 10 Allen Glen High players to choose from as they take on three of South Africa’s most prestigious rugby schools.

Eleven players were selected but sadly one will miss out, that being Jason van der Merwe who sustained a concussion during training. The Allen Glen representatives are split evenly with five forwards and five backs ready for action. The five young men up front will be Ndumiso Mabunga, Clifford Sambo, Silindile Ngobese, Samukelo Themba, and Simphiwe Khumalo

Bringing speed and dynamism to the backline will be Neo Vries, Neo Maloisane, Khathu Mokwena, Booker T Gowere, and Jerry Ntuli, who will also be captaining the squad. As a bonus, the Lions Presidential XV will be coached by Allen Glen’s first-team coach, Johan Kruger.
“It’s going to be tough to balance the flair that the players have and not box them in too much but also find a game plan to take on the big boys,” said Johan, who has warm-up games against Heron Bridge and Parktown Boys to prepare.

The Lions team, made of players from development schools, will be playing Maritzburg College on April 6, Welkom Gimnasium on April 8, and then get the opportunity to play one of the premier South African rugby schools, Grey High School from Port Elizabeth on April 10.
