Western Warriors Cricket Club record solid wins on final weekend on January
Western Warriors U11 and U13 currently playing in Africa Cup while senior mens team playing in CGL Sunday Two league.
The new year has come with a flurry of cricket action as Western Warriors Cricket Club compete on multiple fronts. The club’s U11 and U13 teams are currently competing in the Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) Africa Cup which features U9 to U13 club and academy teams from across the city.
Played at Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys, the U11’s earned a resounding 93 run win against Cover Drive Cricket School, January 29. Aaron Anderson top scored with 65 off 40 balls and Ewan Oosthuizen backed him up with 59 off 30 balls as Warriors posted 246 for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Cover Drive faltered to 153 for 7 in their 20 overs with Zandre Herst the pick of the bowlers taking three wickets for 19 runs in just two overs.
The U13’s had the daunting task of taking on a formidable Sandton Tigers Super Kings team which featured several provincial players. Warriors batted first at Bryanston High School and were bowled out cheaply for just 56. The Sandton team attempted to knock the total down quickly but stumbled with a few early wickets. After steadying the ship, the Super Kings confidently crossed the line in the ninth over.
Western Warriors’ senior team play in the CGL Sunday Two league and hosted Kagiso Cricket Club at their Reddford House home venue, January 29. Warriors batted first setting a target of 270 after being bowled out in the 34th over. Yunus Keiler came in late in the innings scoring 58 off 37 balls after Drishan Naidoo, Warren Pollard and Mario Lennet set the tone, each just missing out on half-centuries with scores of 48, 42 and 43 respectively.
A rain interrupted reply left Kagiso only 31 overs to reach their target but despite going at just under five runs an over, fell short of the Duckworth-Lewis adjusted score. Five Kagiso batsman would be dismissed for single digit scores with Ntokozo Sikhosana the only resistance with 58 off 83 balls as the visitors finished on 150 for seven in 31 overs. Mario Lennet was the pick of the home bowlers taking four wickets in eight overs, conceding 38 runs in the process.
