Panorama Football Club sweating it out to turn preseason into successful campaign

Technical Director Roman Schroder highlighting need for technically astute and coachable players.

The footballing visionaries at Panorama Football Club are setting the tone for the upcoming season.

To improve on a successful 2022 campaign, Technical Director Roman Schroder is combing through the squads in a bid to identify areas of improvement, both tactically and physically. Now into the second week of preseason, players are sweating it out in an effort to show that the standards set last season will be maintained or exceeded.

Building competitive squads is a multifaceted project. “The fundamental attribute is technique. We want players that are capable of finding technical solutions no matter what the situation is on the pitch. That is important because you can have a game plan from a technical perspective but if you don’t have the players to execute that technically it is not going to work,” stated Schroder.

Having a silky touch or an eye for a pass is little without the mental strength to push through the hard times. “Another important attribute is coachability, meaning players who are able to take information and apply it,” he added. Off-the-ball yards run are a key component to any successful team and Schroder outlines that which is a career killer.

“The lack of work-rate is a big issue for me. Any lack of bravery is another big issue,” he said.

Preseason training may be a barometer for ability but the upcoming friendlies will be the true baptisms.

“Repetition is key but also the correct type of repetition. You want to build the correct habit and you want not only to be able to do it in a free space with a cone but also be thrown into situations where you can have repetition under realistic pressures,” explained the technical director, siting the time and space restrictions of high-paced game scenarios.

With the full backing of everyone associated with the club, Schroder’s influence permeates every fibre of operations.

“We need to create an ecosystem where everyone is flowing together. As long as we create those principals and values that everyone follows, the individuals that are highly talented will rise to the top. The team and club environment will facilitate individual success. It is important to have a footballing ecosystem that allows for fluidity,” Schroder concluded.

Panorama will again be playing in the Gauteng Development League giving the club the chance to rub shoulders with the cream of young footballing talent the province has to offer.
