Allen Glen High School celebrate a successful 2022 on the sport field

Principal Jane Kruger reflects on the victories of the past year.

The past year has been full of ups and downs but for Allen Glen High School it was only victory on the sports field. Principal Jane Kruger counts the accolades the school achieved, writing:

“Looking at 2022 retrospectively, that which stands out is how we at Allen Glen adapted to a post-pandemic ‘new normal’, welcoming back all the grades to a five-day academic week. In order to ensure our matriculants were prepared to face the examinations, learners were offered extra intervention classes on weekdays, weekends and during the holidays. I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to our academic staff who readily gave of their time to work towards a positive matric outcome.

“Allen Glen showed our true colours and excelled in a number of extra-mural spheres. All our rugby teams triumphed as the U14s and 1st team won their respective tournaments in the Noordvaal Competition, whilst the U14, U15 and U16 teams were all victorious in the Lions League. Our girls’ rugby impressed this year as one of our learners played in the Lions Craven Week, while eight young ladies were appointed to IPT Lions teams and two made the Lions Socini 7s squad.

“Our ‘old boys’ also found success this year as three ex-Allen Glen learners were accepted into the Western Province Rugby Academy. Two have signed contracts with WP rugby clubs and one with the Griquas Junior Currie Cup team, while another has signed with the Leopards and will feature in the upcoming Currie Cup. Netball too had a great year as the U16 and U17 teams were victorious in their respective league matches. We also applaud an U15 team player who was chosen to play provincial netball this year.

“On the tennis court, our B team continued their successes of 2021 and remained undefeated throughout this year. This winning streak was also replicated with our soccer squads with the U16 team being the victors of their league and the U14 team not losing a game throughout 2022.

“Our chess players proved that Allen Glen remains a force to be reckoned with. The U17 team finished as runners-up at the district championship and qualified to play at the Gauteng Team Championships. Culturally, 10 of our learners were invited to participate in a provincial Women’s Day Commemoration dialogue, facilitated by the Values in Education initiative. At this prestigious event, our learners impressed with their mature and remarkable ideas.

“Behind every success is a great coach and mentor. I wish to pay tribute to those who have shared their time between coaching sport and providing academic support to our learners across all the grades. I would like to close by wishing all our learners every success in their examinations and hope that as 2022 draws to a close, the upcoming holidays provide rest, seasonal cheer and quality family time to the various tiers of the Allen Glen High School family.”
