Poorte make big announcement at year-end function

Player of The Year was awarded to Morne Piater who played the most impressive and disciplined rugby proving to be a great example for the teams’ younger players.

In their efforts to make members of the club feel that their work is valued and to show the community that outstanding accomplishments are celebrated, Saturday, October 28 saw EcoRubber Roodepoort Rugby Club host their awards evening at Sterkfontein Heritage Lodge in Krugersdorp.

Club Chairperson Theuns Naudé welcomed all present before a moment of remembrance was observed.

The evening kicked off with the club giving recognition to their sponsors before moving on to the player awards where Lester Stevenson was awarded Best Try for 2022 for his spectacular try against Raiders Rugby Club.

The Most Committed U19 Player of The Year Award went to Jonathan Lewis while Jayden James and Austin Letimela were named Forward Player of The Year and Backline Player of The Year.

Dewald Booysen and Dylan van Heerden bagged the U19 Player of The Year and U20 Player of The Year Award.

Lujuan Jacobs and Likhwa Ncube topped the U21 awards and scooped the Player of The Year and Players Player of The Year Awards.

The third and second teams top awards went to Tommy van Staaden and Waldo de Bruyn who were both outstanding and showed signs of maturity during the season.

Before moving to the 1st team awards, Honorary Membership was awarded to Adriaan Jacobs, Shawn Benningfield and Beyers van Schoor.

The first team Newcomer of The Year Award went to Reinard Appelgrein while Forward Player of The Year and Backline Player of The Year went to Ruan du Toit and Ethan Anderson.

Given the strong ties that the club has with Hoërskool Bastion it came as no surprise when the announcement was made that they will continue to play their matches at the school’s facilities.

Proving to be a fort for rugby in the West Rand, one of the school’s former learners, loose forward Boeta Piater was awarded Player of the Year.

Hard running forward Ruan du Toit and Morné Piater is also former Hoërskool Bastion learners and the chairperson of the club, Theuns Naudé a former chairperson of the school’s governing body.
