Matric Farewell held for Durban Deep, Matholesville, and Braamfischerville learners

“Prior to the matric dance season, we received requests from parents and leaners asking us to donate for their matric dance needs."

Matric dances have been a tradition in many schools. The dance is essentially held to bid farewell to the matric class as well as to socialise with peers one last time before the final exam starts.

This is a special occasion that happens once in a lifetime for any learner and unfortunately so many learners do not get to experience it due to circumstances that are beyond their control.

On Saturday, October 15 Hope Tshepo partnered with Moani Photography and Positive Young Minds Organisation to host a matric farewell for learners from Durban Deep, Matholesville, and Braamfischerville at the Sol Plaatjie Community Hall.

According to Hope Tshepo’s Executive President and Co-founder Tebogo Molefe, they were inspired by the story of Ntandokazi Zimkhitha Phelanii and many others who approached them as it was a financial challenge for them to experience the once in a lifetime occasion.

The farewell was in a form of a lunch with numerous guests who offered advice and motivation to learners ahead of their final exam season. Learners also received a free photo shoot courtesy of Moani Photography.

“Prior to the matric dance season, we received requests from parents and learners asking us to donate for their matric dance needs. The requests were too high and unfortunately with our budget, we weren’t able to help.”

Due to that, a lot of learners could not attend the matric dance/ farewells in their respective schools.

Ntandokazi posted on her social media account on how she was broken because her parents could not afford it and this will obviously dent her focus, motivation and confidence ahead of her exams.

“We then decided to host a matric dance/ farewell and invited speakers as well as pastors to come and motivate and pray for learners ahead of their exams,” explained Molefe.

Hope Tshepo is a registered and youth led non-profit organisation based in Sol Plaatjie, Durban Deep.

The organisation exists to advocate for young people in our community and surrounding communities.

They have programmes and facilities that will empower the youth psychologically, economically and educationally.
