ActionSA members march through Strubens Valley and Little Falls in support of breast cancer awareness

Walk held in honour of breast cancer survivor and mother of four, Patricia Motaung.

A lime-green and pink column filled the streets of Strubens Valley and Little Falls on October 22.

ActionSA members celebrated Pink Ribbon Day with a Cancer Awareness Walk. Joined by Sister Nicole, a qualified nurse who assisted in educating residents on the realities of cancer, the constituency handed out informative leaflets and brochures.

Special guest and face of the walk was breast cancer survivor Patricia Motaung who has been healthy and cancer free since 2019. Patricia is a 36-year-old, mother of four who is a star baker who loves spending time in the kitchen. According to Sister Nicole, Patricia is the best caregiver at their facility with a special love for the children in her family. “Thank you to everyone for acknowledging the struggles of cancer survivors, it means a lot,” said Patricia.

ActionSA PR Councillor, Elmari Atterbury-Nel, explained her passion in supporting cancer awareness initiatives.

“We all know someone or we are related to someone who is battling with cancer or a cancer survivor. It is then up to us to share our knowledge and encourage community members to go out there for testing,” said Elmari, who herself lost her cousin to the disease.

In 2020, almost 110,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in South Africa, with more than 56 000 cancer-related deaths. As well as the community members who participated, the organisers wished to thank Anthony’s Glass for sponsoring water and refreshments and Cobus Botes and his Beagle Watch Security members for safely escorting the walkers.
