Crawford’s Grade 7s explore the Cradle of Humankind

Students and teachers interacted with the guides enthusiastically, asking pertinent questions and connecting with the origins of their species.

Crawford Ruimsig’s highly anticipated Grade 7 outing took place on Tuesday, September 20, following a lengthy lockdown that prohibited any school excursions.

Students were given the opportunity to learn about the origins of humanity and what makes us unique. The Maropeng staff greeted them as if they were returning home.

The tour was divided into two parts: the first was a visit to the Visitor Centre, where students were taken on a journey through time, beginning with the formation of the planet and ending with the world as we know it today. The second is a walk through the caves, at times crawling, learning about the excavations and explorations by scientists over the years.

Students and teachers interacted with the guides enthusiastically, asking pertinent questions and connecting with the origins of their species.

Mihlali Ningiza said she “enjoyed learning about how the caves formed”, and Maanda Nemamilwe said it was “fun to go somewhere new and overcome fears”.

“I had a great time on the outing! I enjoyed the boat ride through evolution as well as watching videos about how fossils form. I had a great time going into the caves and learning all about them,” Jade Clack stated.
