Roodies and Pinkies recover after gruelling Comrades

While ushering in the spring season, club members dressed up in colourful clothes and had a braai as well as a quiz night.

Runners, particularly novices get excited about running again after the Comrades Marathon and use leg stiffness and pain as a sign of readiness. As soon as the post-race stiffness has passed, they believe they have recovered and they start training again.

Local running clubs Roodepoort Athletics Club (Roodies) and Florida Running Club (Pinkies) both held their Aches and pains after-Comrades braai to celebrate their Comrades runners’ achievements.

Both clubs acknowledged that the damage that Comrades does to the body is deeper and more long-lasting than many runners realise and recovery may not be complete.

On Tuesday evening, September 6 the Pinkies celebrated their Comrades legends at the Discovery Bowling Club with a family and friends braai to soothe the pain from the Comrades.

Peter Purdon received a massive congratulations from his club on achieving his Double Green Number.

A Green Number is awarded in perpetuity to participants who have successfully completed 10 Comrades Marathons, while 20 successful runs earn membership to the exclusive Double Green Number Club.

“Congrats to all our Pinkies who finished the Comrades Marathon and achieved their goals. We at the club are exceptionally proud of you,” said the Club’s Chairperson Tessa Shellard.

Wednesday, September 7 saw the Roodies bring their Comrades war stories, crutches and plasters to their Aches and pains after-Comrades braai that was held at the Ampie Barnard Tennis Courts in Horison.

While ushering in the spring season, club members dressed up in colourful clothes and had a braai as well as a quiz night.

There was also a Novice Prize Award on the night that was won by Melvin Jacobs who somehow predicted his time and ran it. The club donated a medal hanger to him.
