Police confirm multiple-fatality scene near Maraisburg off-ramp
According to the police, the motive for the shooting cannot be confirmed at this stage although the victims are suspected to be illegal miners.
Through a media statement, Gauteng police confirmed the reports of a shooting near the Maraisburg off-ramp where six bodies were found in a veld.
The police were alerted about the bodies that were lying in an open veld next to the N1 freeway in Bosmont and New Canada in the Johannesburg District.
While searching the area police found the six bodies with gunshot wounds.
According to the police, the motive for the shooting cannot be confirmed at this stage although the victims are suspected to be illegal miners.
The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela instructed the Johannesburg District to mobilise all the necessary resources including the K9 Unit and Forensic Services to comb the scene for evidence.
The police confirmed that an investigation is underway.
