Florida police make strides in curbing illegal mining

On Women’s Day the Illegal Mining Disruptive Operation focused on illegal immigrants and illegal mining around the Jerusalema squatter camp.

Saturday, August 6 saw an organised march against illegal mining end peacefully with no injuries reported after the Florida Police Station commander Colonel Amos Tsotetsi agreed with the leader to meet on the same night to discuss a way forward.

Later in a meeting it was discussed how the community could work together with law-enforcement agencies as a collective to root out the illegal mining activity in the area.

Safeguarding the infrastructure and the community was one of the agenda points that were discussed, and later implemented with members from the Florida police, JMPD and security forces patrolling the area.

On Women’s Day the Illegal Mining Disruptive Operation focused on illegal immigrants and illegal mining around the Jerusalema squatter camp, searching vehicles along Odendaal Road in Fleurhof, as well as high visibility around the whole Florida area.

The District OKae Molao illegal mining operation under the overall command of Major General Masha yielded positive results once again on Thursday, August 11 when 16 illegal immigrants were arrested and illegal mining equipment as well as explosives were confiscated.

On Friday, August 12 police visibility around Florida CBD, Fleurhof and Constantia Kloof continued to prevent property-related crimes, trio crimes, street robberies and contact crimes.

Tsotetsi told the Record that members of the public were more than encouraged to report corruption anonymously on 10111, on the My SAPS app, to Florida SAPS on 011 831 7000 or to Colonel Tsotetsi on 079 034 4195.

‘’The Station Operation is happening with community involvement almost every day, while police visibility and stops-and-searches are also conducted,’’ said Tsotetsi.
