Nova Pioneer Ruimsig hosted its first inter-house athletics day on Saturday, May 28. They engaged in a school-wide initiative last year to name the school’s sports houses.
“In honour of the birdlife at Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden we chose bird names. Our four houses are named Kingfisher, Eagles, Hawks, and Falcons,” explained Carla Hercules, Head of School at Nova Pioneer Ruimsig.
Teachers dressed in theme-appropriate attire and decorated their sports houses in similar colours. Parents and extended families came dressed in their children’s house colours and themes to show their support.
Teachers, learners and parents sang war cries and cheered for their houses. There were novelty races for the younger students, while for the older learners, there were long-distance and sprint events. Parents and teachers competed in the adult races.
“It was incredible to watch all of the parents so eager to run and compete against one another. It was a fantastic morning spent interacting with our learners and their families. I am particularly proud of our parents’ support and their willingness to attend all events,” continued Carla.
She concluded by saying that to develop a culture of sportsmanship, team spirit, and parental involvement, they are eager to continue to arrange more sporting events for both parents and learners.
