ETS creating opportunity for two young girls to experience the world of professionalism in Europe

Partnership with West Bromwich Albion beginning to show the first signs of growth

The scoreboard is immediate but paving the way for role models to emerge is the desired result.

Education Through Soccer (ETS) has two bright lights that will be hoping to illuminate the pitches of England’s green pastures. As part of their partnership with West Bromwich Albion, ETS will be sending two girls to experience the sharp end of the fast-developing professionalism of the women’s game. Departing in August, the small contingent is the first of many planned voyages that hope to carve a pathway for young talent.

Lilly Horak and Bongi Maruping have been at ETS for three years and are the club’s top talent in their girls development team. The trip is not a trial but an opportunity for the 13-year-olds to experience the training techniques of a professional club investing in the future.

“They will be going there to gauge how talented girls here compare to UK girls of the same age, as well as to kick-start our partnership with West Brom’s ladies,” said ETS Academy Director, Shawn Tuffney.

Providing the resources to take one of the girls to England is Barrett Slabbert from Pat Hinde Toyota Boksburg. A 15-year member of the Toyota Knights, Barrett has chosen to sponsor Bongi in the hope her journey can inspire others. Bongi lives in Zandspruit and walks to and from the Plein Street skills centre several times a week. “This was the perfect opportunity to help Bongi. She is very talented and she can show other young people that these types of dreams can come true,” said Barrett.

Lilly has been playing soccer since she was seven years old and commands the field with purpose.

“It is a huge privilege. I believe God gave her a talent and we all hope she gets noticed,” said Lilly’s mom, Mariselle. Part of the travelling party with be coach Monique Fernandes who puts their combined efforts down to hard work, discipline and commitment.

Before Lilly and Bongi leave, West Bromwich Albion will be at ETS for a series of coaching sessions near the end of June where all the players will get a taste of the English style. Providing opportunities for talented players is one of the driving ambitions of ETS. Through their partnerships with West Bromwich Albion, Transition Football Academy and a new deal with TS Galaxy, ETS is providing a stage for the cream of the crop to rise.
