Cycling 1 100km for the Frida Hartley Shelter

When Vicky Dockray was approached by Stewarts & Lloyds to assist in this initiative, she did not hesitate to say yes, as she is also very passionate about women empowerment

Violence against women and children is a very profound and widespread problem – especially in South Africa. That is why the Stewarts & Lloyds ‘Men of Steel’ are taking a stand and showing their support to beat this scourge.

This year, Stewarts & Lloyds as a whole, but the men of the company in particular, have chosen to take a real stand and raise money for the Frida Hartley Shelter (FHS) in Yeoville. This amazing shelter takes in homeless women and their children who have endured neglect, abuse, trauma and homelessness. The shelter is also turning 100 years old this year, and the money raised during this campaign will help the shelter to expand and help even more women and children in need.

What makes this statement even bolder, is the fact that the company will have the help of cyclist Vicky Dockray, who will be taking part in the Madrid to Lisbon road bike tour. The race is due to start on July 1 and end on July 9. Vicky will be cycling 1 100km, with 18 000 metres of climbing from Spain to Portugal.

Stewarts & Lloyds’ goal is to raise R110 000 (R10 per km) that will empower and educate vulnerable women, and go a long way to ensure these women, as well as their children have a better future to look forward to.

When Vicky was approached by Stewarts & Lloyds to assist in this initiative, she did not hesitate to say yes, as she is also very passionate about women empowerment.

Although she has been participating in a number of challenging cycling tours, which include the Tour of Good Hope; The Argus; and The Alpine Tour, which she said had many renowned climbs from the Tour de France; she had cycled from Germiston to Maputo in four days while battling strong winds; as well as virtually cycled 360km for charity on a mountain bike, she admitted that this cycling race will be her toughest one yet.
