JMPD urges residents to report illegal dumpers

"We urge residents to report illegal dumpers using the Anti-Illegal Dumping Hotline 082 779 1361."

On Wednesday, March 30 the Northsider reported on an illegal dumping incident that took place on Hendrik Potgieter Road next to CTM in Allen’s Nek on Thursday, March 24.

Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF) patrollers discovered an incident and immediately requested for back-up while they managed to block the illegal dumper in before he could get away.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Xolani Fihla confirmed the incident andsaid illegal dumping has been a thorn in the flesh not only for the City of Johannesburg, but also the residents.

“On the day of the incident, Honeydew CPF handed over the offender to JMPD and the gentleman was instructed to remove the rubble he had dumped and to place it back onto his bakkie. He was taken to the JMPD Roodepoort pound where he was fined R1 500 for illegal dumping. We have received numerous complaints from members of the public regarding this serious offence.

“We urge residents to report illegal dumpers using the Anti-Illegal Dumping Hotline 082 779 1361.

“We also urge residents to take clear photos of the illegal dumping as well as the number plate of the vehicle, and then send these pictures together with the date, time and location of the illegal dumping,” said Xolani.

A video of the illegal dumpers was shared on social media and caught the attention of City of Joburg’s MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Michael Sun who shared some kind words through a Facebook post praising the Honeydew CPF patrollers for their work.

“Great job by the Honeydew Community CPF Patrollers for catching the illegal dumpers, you really taught them a lesson,” said Sun.
