Power utility cracks down on cable theft

City Power is making strides in curbing rampant theft and vandalism when thieves were arrested

Residents across different areas are constantly plagued by power outages, many of them caused by cable theft and vandalism. City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena said three suspected cable thieves were arrested in Roodepoort last week.

“A member of the community came forward with CCTV footage showing thugs damaging the electricity network. They are known in the area and their arrest was imminent. Multiple arrests were made within six days in various areas and we are making strides in reducing cable theft,” Mangena said

In Honeydew, residents of Bothma Street have been without any electricity since December 21. The cause of the outage seems to be an attempt to steal the substation on Beyers Naudé Drive. The substation was subsequently left on the ground and has not been picked up.

According to City Power, it costs around R700 000 just to replace stolen and vandalised infrastructure. “We plead with the community to report those perpetrators to City Power or the nearest police station.”
