South Road finally open

That's right - the once crumbled piece of road is operational once again.

A lot can happen in only a few years.

Let’s take the past four years and have a look at one or two historical events. American actress Meghan Markle joined the British Royal family and left again taking Prince Harry with her; after years of legal debate, Saudi allowed women to drive for the first time in history; Nasa launched the historical Parker Solar Probe, with the spacecraft officially entering the Sun’s orbit after almost four years of travel and of course the ongoing fight between a global pandemic and the entire human race.

Over the course of these four years Lindhaven residents has witnessed history being made all around them and all around the world. All while having to listen to one empty promise after another pertaining to the opening of the infamous South Road bridge.

Within the time it took for a spacecraft to reach the sun’s orbit, the completion of the road has been postponed more than a few times, allegedly due to various issues such as steel shortages, the reassignment of project engineers and the (understandable) coronavirus lockdown and further restrictions.

It is only after more than four years of battling with authorities, that ward councillor René Benjamin proudly announced the official opening of the bridge. That’s right – the once crumbled piece of road is operational once again.

On Friday, December 17 motorists were welcomed with an unexpected, yet pleasant surprise when they drove through Lindhaven. However, warned René, motorists should take into consideration that the road is not entirely finished just yet.

“Even though they wanted to complete both sidewalks before opening the road, the residents were persistent and asked about it on a daily basis. Even though the road is now safe for motorists, pedestrians need to be careful,” she said.

“The pavement and other small stuff still needs to be done. Even though the road has been deemed safe for motorists, they still need to keep in mind that there’s further work to be done which will be completed in January.”
