CPF initiates JOC service to improve communication

The CPF in Muldersdrift have partnered with the police to have a JOC trial run to improve communication between the community and police in dangerous situations

In a high pressure situation, effective communication can often be the difference between life and death. That is why the CPF in Muldersdrift has partnered with the police to have a Joint Operations Committee (JOC) trial run from September 3 to 5. The JOC initiative is to facilitate and improve communication between the police and the community in an emergency.

Deputy chairperson of the CPF, Paul Catlett said people are more likely to report crimes on social media instead of going to the police first. “It has been noted that community safety groups generally receive posts in an emergency faster than the police. With this in mind, more information is gathered on WhatsApp groups such pin location and contacts on the scene can be shared over the phone accurately,” he explained.

The trial is expected to run from 9:00 until 01:00 and would have a member of the CPF in a control room bridging communication between the community and the police. Catlett that the JOC in the control room would have access and be linked to security and patrol groups in the area. “Members of the community can message any of the groups requesting assistance. The CPF controller will then call the contact on the scene to establish more vital information and what resources might be required. CPF resources will be dispatched if necessary and the shift commander at the police station will then deploy sector vehicles as necessary.”

This information will be used to have a positive impact on the response of police vehicles and members to complaints. Afterwards the CPF member on duty would have to send a summary report of activities during the night to raise with the station commander.

Catlett shared that the CPF needs a phone for the duty manager, a laptop connected to WhatsApp and data or Wi-Fi connection. “At this point a laptop can be made available; however, we will need a team of four or five people willing to join on this project to make it a success.”

If you are interested in donating a phone, contribute to data or can assist in becoming a controller, contract Paul on 061 812 6920
