Renewal of driver’s licences addressed

The committee encourages Gauteng citizens to use the avenues that have been made available.

The MEC of Roads and Transport, Jacob Mamabolo recently addressed the renewal of drivers’ licences through the ‘Request A Slot’ campaign, which will run from September 1 until March 31, 2022.

GPL’s (General Public Licence) media services on behalf of the Portfolio Committee on Roads and Transport Chairperson, Gregory Schneemann released a statement wherein drivers are informed of the new campaign.

According to the statement, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Roads and Transport is optimistic about the public value initiatives presented by Mamabolo.

In a special committee meeting held on the evening of Wednesday, September 1, the Department shared detailed plans to deal with the backlog following the announcement by the Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula on the extension of drivers’ licences renewals.

The committee is pleased with what seems to be efficient and innovative plans that will address the demand for renewals. These include, among others, renewal facilities at selected Gautrain stations and more Driver Licence and Traffic Centres (DTLC) with extended operating days and hours from 07:00 until 21:00 at some, with the introduction of biometric systems to accelerate efficiency in service delivery.

“This is an exciting programme which the Portfolio Committee on Roads and Transport supports. The committee will, of course, exercise its oversight role on the implementation of the different initiatives. The department is expected to provide regular reports and updates on this programme. This matter will be a standing item on the agenda in all our portfolio committee meetings,” Schneemann said.

The committee encourages Gauteng citizens to use the avenues that have been made available by the department to renew their licences and not wait for the 11th hour, by requesting a slot one of the following ways:
