Founder of Feed the Fury shares her expertise on pets

Celeste revealed to the Northsider that pets who spend more time outdoors use more energy to keep warm, and pet owners should always check their water and food bowls regularly to make sure they have enough food and water as they tend to eat more during colder weather.

Founder of Feed the Fury, Celeste Vermeulen shared her views on pets with the Northsider and what to do in cold weather as well as how you change their food.

According to Celeste, if you are cold, your pets are cold too. While some are indoor pets, others are kept outdoors.

“As you can imagine, those living outdoors are more exposed to the elements, especially during the nights as the temperature drops.

“Even if you are not able to bring your fur babies inside during the night, it is important to keep your pets warm and cosy.

“A good-quality kennel placed in a sheltered area is a good start. Plastic is the most efficient option as it protects against wind and rain during all seasons.

“Make sure that the kennel you purchase is big enough, especially for younger pets so that they do not outgrow their kennels.

“These are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased from pet stores or even some hardware stores.

“To these you can add a warm blanket or two and if possible, the kennel can be raised a few inches off the ground to eliminate any cold that might come from the ground or surface the kennel is placed upon,” said Celeste.

“Also ensure that the water is fresh and has not frozen over. Using plastic bowls is also a safer option in lower temperatures.

“Do not shave your pets during the winter as the extra fur helps them stay warm. For breeds with shorter fur, you can purchase inexpensive fleece jackets to help keep their body temperature up.

“Outdoor pets are susceptible to hypothermia in extreme weather. If you spot any animal that is being neglected during bouts of very cold weather, share your concerns with the owner and educate them on keeping their pets warm, and why this is important.

“If you are really concerned about the welfare of an animal in your community, you can also report your concern to your local SPCA to take action,” said Celeste.
