Honeydew Toastmasters meet face to face for first time since Covid

“I feel more confident when I need to speak in front of people. I have also become a better listener.”

After meeting for the umpteenth time online, the Honeydew Toastmasters Club chose to change the venue back to a face-to-face meeting – to the delight of most of the members.

On Monday, 10 May Honeydew Toastmasters held their meeting and before it started, new members were inducted (which hadn’t been possible before Covid) and they all received their official name badges.

The new inductees are now proud members of Honeydew Toastmasters Club which prides itself on being a fun environment to learn speaking and leadership skills.

The meetings always consist of three parts:

• Prepared speeches:

Members are given the opportunity to do a prepared speech – which normally varies from five to seven minutes – on topics chosen by them with the guidance of the particular pathway they have enrolled for.

The prepared speeches were presented, taken into consideration the meetings had been confined to online for such a long time.

• Table topics:

These are the impromptu speeches. Anyone present can volunteer to do this for one to two minutes.

The table topics took a different turn and those who put their hands up to participate had to do a one to two minute speech from a picture they received.

One of the first-time guests remarked that he was astonished how anyone could speak for one to two minute by just looking at a picture.

• Evaluation:

The evaluation is always the interesting part as this is where constructive and objective feedback is given to the speakers.

Clarity, vocal variety, eye contact and gestures are just a few of the comprehensive list of criteria which form part of the evaluation feedback.

Speakers take this feedback into consideration when they prepare for their next speech.

Treasurer of Honeydew Toastmasters Club, Hannes Mare had the following to say on what his Toastmasters membership has meant to him. “I feel more confident when I need to speak in front of people. I have also become a better listener.”

Honeydew Toastmasters Club meet every second (face-to-face) and fourth (online) Monday of the month, and guests are welcome to join (for free). They can follow:
