Clearwater shoppers unite in prayer to save baby

"The next moment all those present fell down on their knees and prayed – that's all we could do. Then I heard someone screaming that she was breathing! I cannot describe the joy and gratitude we all felt because she was breathing."

On Saturday, 15 May Clearwater Mall shoppers found themselves with very few alternatives but to seek divine intervention when a one-year-old baby’s life was hanging in the balance after choking on a sweet.

Randfontein resident, Danika van der Berg was shocked when her daughter started choking, turned blue and threw up as she tried to get the sweetie out.

People came to assist the traumatised mother and attempted to save the baby’s life.

“Eventually they lay my lifeless little girl with the two pony tails whose little face had turned blue down on the floor and started to apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and do mouth to mouth breathing, but the four people who tried did not succeed – her eyes flipped and she died.

“The next moment all those present fell down on their knees and prayed – that’s all we could do. Then I heard someone screaming that she was breathing! I cannot describe the joy and gratitude we all felt because she was breathing,” said Danika.

Later the ambulance arrived and transported the little girl to hospital. According to Danika, her daughter showed more signs of life in the ambulance and opened her eyes slightly wider.

“I remember her pupils were immensely big and she just stared at the corner,” said the grateful mother.

Clearwater Mall Marketing Manager, Jess Denner confirmed the incident, and said they were extremely grateful to all the shoppers who got involved and assisted to the best of their ability to save the child.

“Security immediately responded to the incident after being notified by one of our tenants. Our staff members are trained in first aid, but only one person can attend to a patient at a time.

“Having a group of individuals pull together to pray for the little girl’s survival is absolutely amazing, and we are over the moon about her survival and to hear that she is in good health.

“It’s imperative as a parent to know the basics of first aid and how to perform the Heimlich Manoeuvre in order to dislodge foreign objects,” said Jess
