Thoroughbred horses left abandoned

A court case is currently pending against a Muldersdrift property owner after horses were confiscated due to neglect and starvation.

SPCA Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp inspectors confiscated thoroughbred horses in deplorable condition on a plot in Muldersdrift. The owner of the property had allegedly ignored previous requests from the organisation regarding the diet and care of the horses.

Mandy Cattanach, manager of the SPCA Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp branch said thoroughbred horses are used to good-quality food, but the rescued horses were only being fed grass which resulted in their deterioration. “There is a process to follow before an animal can be confiscated, and once we got all our ducks in a row, the owner of the property was prosecuted. The court case is ongoing but for now the animals remain with us,” she explained.

The organisation is pleading with residents and the community to assist in any way they can to help care for the horses. “We are asking the community and especially the equine community, to please help us build these poor souls back up to the majestic animals they once were,” Mandy said.

The horses need to have their teeth filed and hooves done, and the extremely expensive veterinarian, farrier, and dental care they have been denied need to be paid for.

These are their nutritional requirements:

• Good-quality eragrostis or teff, and lots of it

• Concentrates (Epol Rider Cubes 10%)

• Salt and mineral licks

• Carrots will not do them any harm either
