Help Ons Huis make life easier for the elderly

The old age home has outlined a wish list and is asking anyone who may be willing, to please come forward and help them.

Some say getting old is a curse, others prefer to think of it as a blessing, but one constant is that the process is inevitable.

The luckier elderly community members can rely on their families for support in their old age, but others are forced to rely on complete strangers to care for them and help them through daily life. This is why places like Residentia Ons Huis are so important – the staff, despite being strangers, do everything they can to treat the residents in their care like family.

Ons Huis is a Florida-based old age home and non-profit organisation (NPO) that makes up one of the 14 Residentia facilities in South Africa. Currently, they care for 102 elderly residents, and receive government subsides for less than half. The average age of the Ons Huis residents also sits at around 85, so many of the residents’ children are also pensioners who cannot afford to support their parents. With the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, the financial strain on many people has also affected the support the home receives.

The old age home is asking for help from local community members to help their facility reach its highest potential. The facility has outlined a wish list and is asking anyone who may be willing, to please come forward and help:
• Toiletries for residents
• Paving stones for the walkway by the entrance – this is the only place residents can go for a stroll, but the condition has deteriorated so badly that a few people have fallen and hurt themselves, so it is no longer safe and needs to be repaired
• Indoor plants and colourful umbrellas for the new coffee shop which will be launched on 1 May
• People who enjoy gardening to volunteer their time to improve the Ons Huis garden
• Wall heaters
• Jojo tanks
• Help with a tilt fryer because the element on their current one keeps needing to be replaced
• Induction plates
• E-boilers

If you are able to help Ons Huis, contact the home’s manager, Marita van den Berg, on 011 672 5018, 011 672 0416, 082 952 2264 or onshuis@residenia.co.za.
