A partnership for the ages

Two CLAWbies found their forever homes after another successful Benji + Moon Date-A-Dog event.

Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW) is a non-profit organisation (NPO) situated in Durban Deep, with the primary goal of providing veterinary care to desperate animals.

The amazing thing about CLAW is that they don’t only provide veterinary care for abused, rescued, or abandoned animals, but also those who are a part of a loving family that cannot afford veterinary care.

This NPO will never turn animals away, so despite primarily being a veterinary-based organisation they still shelter animals that are left on their doorstep. Seeing the amazing work that CLAW was doing, and hoping to help the NPO find loving homes for the dogs in their care, Benji + Moon Pet Supplies started an adoption initiative specifically for CLAW. Since the first Linden Market in 2016, B+M has hosted Date-A-Dog events whenever they can, having hosted 11 to date (not including the online adoption drive they started when the market was put on hold due to the lockdown).

“We first adopted from CLAW in 2012, and knowing that they offer veterinary care to impoverished communities and by default become a shelter meant we needed to help clear those runs and get as many CLAWbies as we could adopted,” said Karen Carr, co-founder of B+M.

Through the Date-A-Dog adoption events, the two organisations have managed to home approximately 86 dogs and nine cats; most recently, two adorable dogs named Foxy and Stitch, who were adopted (post home checks) from the Linden Market on 27 and 28 March. The Date-A-Dog events are not only for adoptions though. Donations for CLAW are also collected on the day, and B+M manage to raise an average of between R3 000 and R10 000 per event, which goes a very long way in helping CLAW with the costs of their veterinary services, especially since their international funding was pulled in 2019.

Adding to the help that B+M gives CLAW, five per cent of each of their sales also goes to the animal welfare organisation, totalling over R77 000 since they began helping.
