Witpoortjie residents share the benefits of free aerobics sessions

Every Saturday at 7.30am the Vredenhoek Street park comes alive with energy

The realisation of a fitter mind and body starts with a goal and is achieved through finding the motivation to overcome the excuses.

Every Saturday morning since February, Vredenhoek Street Park has been buzzing with the vibrant scenes of colourful lycra and thumping workout beats. Enthusiastic fitness fanatics have made the park the site of a free aerobics workout class that caters for all ages, shapes and fitness levels. The sweating begins at 7.30am and the trained instructor leads the way for a full two hours of fun-filled exercise.

The initiative was kickstarted by local resident, Zinhle Tati, who first identified the need for people to stay fit during lockdown. Zee, as she is known, began posting 21-day workout videos through WhatsApp and has since grown a far-reaching online presence that includes 25 000 Instagram followers. Her account, @zee_nobahle_tati, posts regular workout videos and meal plans to keep households fit and happy.

Getting to the gym is the hardest part and Zee hopes the public park environment can be the perfect platform for gym-shy residents. “We get motivation from each other and people are joining like crazy. The numbers have been so amazing,” said Zee. The sessions are absolutely free and all the community needs to bring is a towel, a water bottle, your mask and a positive attitude.

Shaking off negative perceptions and personal insecurities is at the core of Zee’s message. “Don’t listen to what other people say about you and make sure whenever you get advice, process that internally. Whatever you do though, go for it. Anything is possible,” enthused Zee.

Slipping on the workout gear is half the challenge but with Zee’s free workout, the exercise is the fun part.
