Drifters in pursuit of form ahead of league

West Rand’s SAB side Golden Drifters Football Club is currently on a mission to revive their A game as the SAB league resumes soon.

The local outfit has been out of action for almost a year due to the ban on sporting action by the government during the hard lockdown. This resulted in the club releasing some players while others trained in isolation – ultimately breaking the team’s spirit.

The recent green light for amateur leagues to resume activity by SAFA saw Golden Drifters players tie up their boot laces and head to the pitch for two pre-season fixtures on Sunday, 28 February.

Playing under the technical guidance of coach Mahlatsi Mabusela, club president Fannie Dlamini, and assistant and fitness coach Sbu Buthelezi, the team’s hard work did not pay off as they failed to secure victories in the two friendly matches.

Firstly, Drifters squared off with Real Supersport FC and lost on penalties after playing to a two-all draw. In the second match, the Zandspruit side fought hard but lost 3–2 against Bright Stars FC from Diepsloot.

“Both games were very difficult for them. The boys still need to put in more effort in training to do better,” Dlamini reflected.

He attributed the losses to the insufficient time for some of the boys to train because of their absence at the clubhouse.

As their first league game draws near, Dlamini said they were looking to strengthen their chemistry in another friendly match at their home ground, Muldersdrift Sports Complex.
Drifters are expected to play its first league match against a common rival, Real Supersport FC on 14 March.
