Wilro Lions uplifting the community one project at a time

Throughout February, the Wilro Park Lions club has been utilising all of their free time to reach out to and help the most desperate members of their community and the areas surrounding it.

Anyone who keeps up with local charities knows the saying, ‘Where there is a need, there is a Lion,’ and this is certainly the case.

In what they have dubbed ‘Lions at Work’, the club has assigned their members different outreach projects to help as many people with as many different things as possible. The club gave new life to an old project by relaunching their Dignity Handbag project, which sees community members donate pre-loved handbags with a few essential items and a small gift in them, which are then passed on to victims of rape and abuse living in local safe houses.

To add to this, the club continued with their regular collection and distribution of food parcels for their Hunger Alleviation project. With the help of their twinning club (Lions Club of Mannheim Rosengarten in Germany) the Lions were also able to put together 220 appreciation gifts for the nursing staff at Life Flora Clinic to express their appreciation for their assistance in the fight against Covid-19. Another February project was dubbed Project Upliftment, and sees the Wilro Lions assisting an elderly couple who lost everything with household items, food, clothes and whatever they may need to get back on their feet.

The Wilro Lions don’t only help adults though, in the month of February (which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month) they put together comfort kits for children suffering from cancer. The Lions’ knitting angels also spent the month crocheting and knitting blankets, baby jerseys, and teddy bears for vulnerable children as we move closer to the winter season. The club is presently collecting donations of school bags and school shoes which they will be giving to learners whose families are struggling to pay for essential school supplies.
