Roodekrans’ Sensei Petra Smit relaying the Shotokan art with poise and grace

“Here we promote friendship inside and outside the dojo. The kids need to grow within the dojo.”

Like each step in the mastery of a kata, so is the incremental improvement of mind and body through karate.

Sensei Petra Smit has had her Platkroon Avenue dojo for just over six years and like everyone in the sporting sphere, 2020 was a year of adjustment. Specialising in the Shotokan style of karate, the experienced sensei has a broad mix of students, ranging from junior ‘dinkies’ starting from three years old, to parents looking to regain their youth.

Still providing lessons under the current level of state-imposed regulations, the Shotokan community had adapted well to any challenge thrown at them. While unable to hold in-person competitions, new online avenues have been opened allowing her and her students to test their skills against international competitors.

The dojo also offers the well-known Israeli combat technique, Krav Maga, taught by Sensei Petra’s husband, Deon. Due to the use of weapons, Krav Maga classes are only available to those 14 years and older, but the speed and power developed through this technique are essential tools in the modern world.

Pressure always exists in competitive scenarios, but incremental improvement and comradery are central to the dojo’s objectives. “Here we promote friendship inside and outside the dojo. The kids need to grow within the dojo,” said the 5th Dan black belt. Although progressing through the belts can come with a great sense of accomplishment, Sensei Petra stressed that the journey is greater than the destination, musing, “Walk the walk, do not chase belts”.

She emphasised that karate teaches respect, perseverance and patience, as well as increases one’s fitness and develops self-confidence. “If someone is eyeing a victim, he is always going to pick the one who looks weakest,” said Petra. No matter the age or size, Petra is ready to impart the age-old Japanese art on anyone who would accept its grace.
