Libraries still closed under Level 1

Residents who often utilised the public libraries for their reading material will need to continue to find other options.

Literary enthusiasts were hopeful that the lower lockdown level would mean that they would be able once again to travel to alternate universes with the help of the vast array of books in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) public libraries.

However, they were left disappointed when CoJ announced that the 89 libraries in the city would remain closed until all health and safety protocols have been adhered to. Residents who often utilised the public libraries for their reading material will need to continue to find other options.

The various public libraries have been closed since the lockdown began in March, and CoJ has previously notified residents that all 89 libraries needed extensive changes in the way they operate due to the virus. The Department of Community Development is reportedly preparing for deep-cleaning all the libraries, and said that communication would be sent once the applications to reopen the facilities have been approved.

The City has urged residents to continue to make use of the Johannesburg Libraries’ online collections, which can be accessed using the Libby app. This app provides access to e-books and audio books from local libraries. You can also get access to the Gauteng online collection with your individual membership number.
