Eagle Canyon homeowners use golf to support charities

Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA had a collection box at the clubhouse so additional donations of pet food were made by caring residents.

Golf and charity have become synonymous over the years as few better ways exist to promote a cause or send a message than chasing the dimpled plastic and rubber sphere across beautiful fairways and vast greens.

Eagle Canyon Golf Estate Homeowners Association held its annual golf day on Saturday, 19 September, with all proceeds going to their selected charities. Midway through the morning field tee offs, main sponsor Kia Bryanston held their Stash the Cash competition. The aim would be to dig through a Kia Sedona to retrieve a white or orange sticker worth R200 within the 30-second time limit. “We had another trick up our sleeve as there was a black sticker hidden in a more intricate place worth R1 000,” said Dave Christie, Eagle Canyon Director of Golf.

The three charities being spoiled on the day were The Supper Foundation, Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA, and Cancer Association of South Africa. Errol Ashman of The Supper Foundation explained his organisation’s purpose, saying, “Our core aim is the upliftment of the youth and children in informal settlements around Johannesburg. Besides feeding schemes we also endeavour to teach strong Christian principles.”

Each charity was overjoyed with support as they received R20 000 for their respective causes. “CANSA would like to thank Eagle Canyon Country Club, for all their support and efforts towards making the charity golf day possible. We appreciate the generous donations from all the sponsors and all those that participated towards making the day a success and contributing towards the fight against cancer,” said Tarryn Human, CANSA Community Mobiliser.

Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA had a collection box at the clubhouse so additional donations of pet food were made by caring residents. SPCA fundraiser, Nicole Manners expressed her gratitude, saying, “We are thrilled to be receiving this funding. We would like to thank each and every golfer who participated in the event. It means such a lot to us to have received this amazing support, particularly to the animals.”

A glitzy prize-giving was held at the clubhouse’s Coppa Bar where the winning fourball was announced. Kreston Govender, Kelton Govender, Jerry Erasmus and Dave Bowman carded 101 points, four clear of the nearest competition. Grant Joubert smashed the day’s longest drive and Dries Mostert was won ‘Closest to the Pin’ for his effort on the fourth hole.
