Six-week-old baby killed by dog in Honeydew

Honeydew Police opened an inquest docket following the death of infant that was bitten by a dog at an estate in Honeydew.

The incident happened yesterday, Thursday, 3 September. Spokesperson for the police, Captain Balan Muthan confirmed to the Northsider that a six-week-old baby girl was injured by a Husky breed dog at the well-known estate.

“This unfortunate incident happened at Eagle Canyon Golf and Lifestyle Estate,” he said.

“The domestic worker’s baby was asleep unattended when she started crying. The two dogs, which have the freedom of the home, heard her cry. Using animal parental instincts, one of the dogs tried to lift the baby to take her to the mother, but accidentally bit her,” Muthan explained this tragedy.

Muthan, who was on the scene, said the dogs appeared to be non-vicious. “I went inside the house and stood next to the dogs to establish whether they were vicious, but I found them to be friendly. Even during the movement of paramedics and the estate security, the dogs never showed signs of being attackers,” he clarified the status of the dogs.

He said the baby wasn’t badly bitten. Also, paramedics tried everything in their power to save the baby, but they were unsuccessful. While the investigation is under way, the Northsider also learnt that the Randburg SPCA visited the property today, Friday, 4 September to take the dog to be kept as evidence.

The Randburg SPCA has been approached for further comment on the matter. This is a developing story. A follow-up article will be published once more information is received.
