#18GirlChild partners with recruitment firm for Mandela Day

Placing oneself at the forefront of a cause to improve the lives of others while asking nothing in return is at the core of every action on this day of introspection.

Self-sacrifice and the pursuit of unshakable morality is the essence of Mandela Day and the great man that it aims to celebrate.

Placing oneself at the forefront of a cause to improve the lives of others while asking nothing in return is at the core of every action on this day of introspection. Few forces are as magnetic as the will for positive change, making it inevitable that like-minded entities would gravitate towards one another.

Roodepoort-based driver of change, Layla Mohamed, has taken her #18GirlChild project from strength to strength. What began as a selfless birthday wish has evolved into a now fully registered non-profit company (NPC) whose reach has the potential to be as limitless as the young beacon of hope herself.

However, the goal of providing female sanitary products to young girls in need remains constant. Joining forces with Layla and #18GirlChild for Mandela Day is fellow female empowerment guru, Asenath van den Berg, Director of ASIE Personnel. Through the recruitment firm she founded almost 15 years ago, Asenath has been unearthing young talent and placing them on the pathway to their dreams. This cultured eye for potential helped Asenath recognise the value of #18GirlChild.

“At ASIE Personnel we are passionate about enhancing lives, and this inspirational #18GirlChild project resonated with us and our values,” she stated.

Together they form a combination of inspirational selflessness and sophisticated charm that brings hope to girls across the country. “We are privileged to be a part of this project, to give back and give hope to young underprivileged teenage girls,” continued Asenath. ASIE Personnel has donated 100 luxury sanitary packs that will alleviate the financial strain that can limit young girls. The packs consist of a facecloth, sanitary pads, soap, a key ring, mask, a chocolate, hand sanitizer and a body spray.

Assembled at ASIE Personnel’s headquarters in Midrand, the packs will spread the #18GirlChild message across the nation. Destined for parts of the Cape, the packs contain a note of encouragement for their recipients in Bonteheuwel, Elsies River and Kroonvale in Graaff-Reinet, which reads, “You are strong. You are Smart. You are Beautiful. You are not alone. You can do amazing things” says Layla #18GirlChild Founder.

The purpose of Mandela Day is to remind South Africans of their shared existence and unmistakable commonality. It celebrates a man whose spirit serves as the fabric that binds our interwoven nation. These two incredible women have harnessed that positivity and steered it towards the youth.

Asenath captures this, saying “To us, giving back is so important; knowing that we can make a small difference, inspire someone or give someone hope; letting them know that they matter, that there is still good in this world and that someone cares.”
