The most important meal of the day comes out tops in the grand ‘Tournament of South Africa’s Favourite Things’

Sixteen foods, people and places were paired up, and round by round the field got smaller until one brand rose to the top, having conquered all

To offer some light distraction from the state-imposed lockdown, we threw together a few of the nation’s quintessential heart-string pullers in a hypothetical last item standing duel.

Sixteen foods, people and places were paired up, and round by round the field got smaller until one brand rose to the top, having conquered all.

Mrs H.S. Balls’ Chutney was first paired against the Highveld’s number-one inland ocean resort, Sun City’s Valley of the Waves, with the Chutney amassing 63 per cent of the vote.

In the matchup of the quarter-finals, the Chutney would see off its direct competitor, All Gold Tomato Sauce, with an eight per cent swing.

Another food item, beloved Simba Chips, would also fall at the hands of the brown bomber. Meeting the Chutney in the final was a breakfast restaurant born in the USA but perfected in South Africa, Wimpy.

The restaurant did away with pre tournament favourites Castle Lager and Rassie Erasmus by similar margins in the opening and semi-final rounds respectively. Sandwiched in between was an easy win against Koeksisters. In the final, the vote would be split 58 to 42 per cent to the delicious restaurant chain.

The Chutney stood no chance against the beast which had devoured both the faces of beer and rugby before it. The response to the ‘Tournament of South Africa’s Favourite Things’ has been heart-warming and we thank everyone who participated. Who knows what the future holds for our illustrious competition, but a quick guess would be to highlight the things that make our West Rand a special place to live.

If you have any great places, people or events that deserve a special mention, let us know in the comments section, and we can find out what exactly is the West Rand’s favourite thing.
