The Charterhouse online curriculum inspires full engagement, where the teacher remains the teacher, and the child remains the learner. The content doesn’t require the parent to be the teacher, but rather gives the parent an opportunity to fulfil a key role in supporting, encouraging and participating when time allows.

A Grade 3 teacher from Charterhouse Schools, Karen Hayes has taken the initiative to produce face shields for medical staff who are treating patients suffering from the deadly Covid-19.

Netcare collected these masks from Miss Hayes’ complex; however, they weren’t allowed inside the complex due to the strict social-distancing rules. The teacher had to walk to the entrance of her complex and hand-deliver the masks to the Netcare collection vehicle.

Charterhouse Preparatory Principal, Desmond Zeelie is proud of his staff taking these initiatives in a safe and ethical manner.

In addition to this, Pre-Primary principal, Yvette Godwin, took the school’s 3D printer home with her to further assist with the Netcare initiative.

The school is working together with Why? Toyz, an educational 3D printing company that supplies pre-primary schools with 3D printers and a curriculum specifically designed for early childhood development. Why? Toyz has safely collected these masks and will deliver them to Baragwanath Hospital.

Another batch will be printed for a hospital in the Western Cape. The school continues to encourage their Charterhouse families to stay safe and indoors during the lockdown.

The school’s supportive spirit encourages the Charterhouse families to assist in any way possible to flatten the infection curve. One Charterhouse family, for example, prepared food for a shelter near their neighbourhood.

The school believes these small initiatives create stronger communities with the spirit of ubuntu our nation stands for.
