CoJ does roadside checks to ensure compliance with regulations

The roadside operations indicated that there is a need to intensify awareness on the lockdown and to enforce the laws.

On 3 April Mayor Geoffrey Makhubo, along with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) held two roadside check operations aimed at ensuring that motorists comply with the regulations of the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002.

These operations were held across the City of Johannesburg in an effort to monitor public compliance with the lockdown and related regulations.

At least 17 people were arrested for not complying and were charged in terms of the regulations that have been proclaimed by the Minister of Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs, in line with the Act.

The roadside operations indicated that there is a need to intensify awareness on the lockdown and to enforce the laws.

“I have observed that many people are abusing the permits granted to them to perform essential services. It is concerning to see many citizens not in compliance with the lockdown regulations. Those trying to mislead law enforcement will be arrested,” Mayor Makhubo said in his statement.

During the roadblock held on 5 April, 52 arrests were made for non-compliance.

CoJ will continue to conduct roadside check operations over the remaining days of the national lockdown to enforce compliance. The necessary steps will be taken against those who do not adhere to the rules.

“I would also like to thank those who have heeded the call, and are in compliance with the regulations,” said Mayor Makhubo.

Makhubo and JMPD urge every single person to stay at home and only go out when they need to perform essential services or buy essentials. This is for their own safety and health, but also to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country
