How you can help the elderly during lock down

''We ask all volunteers to buy something extra such as canned food, bread and so on and take it to the retirement homes near them to help the elders who are struggling.''

During these trying times of the Covid-19 pandemic, we should not forget about our elders in our local retirement and old age homes.

Many elderly people are not able to do basic tasks such as buying essentials at the grocery store, which makes this time even more difficult. Community members can also give the elderly emotional support, even by just calling or texting an older person you know.

“During this time we need to look after one another, especially our elders. We ask all volunteers to buy something extra such as canned food, bread and so on and take it to the retirement homes near them to help the elders who are struggling,” Ward 83 councillor, Florence Roberts stated.

According to Florence, arrangements have been made with nearby grocery stores to help deliver the essentials to the retirement homes. However, not many elderly people have enough money to see them through the month.

For any information and questions, volunteers can contact Florence on 082 414 9735.
